Almost
150 people gathered for CURE's 13th Annual Meeting
held February 26, 2005 at the Montevideo VFW Club
to listen to State Hydrologist Pat Baskfield talk
about the state of the Minnesota River as well as
to celebrate the past year's accomplishments. The
crowd enjoyed a meal of organic food presented by
Alyce's Catering of Appleton. A video, shot during
the 2004 Spring Observation Trip and produced and
edited by Jon Hegland of Riverside Productions
brought laughter and good memories from the
audience of canoe enthusiasts.
John
White, editor of the Clara City Herald, a long
time CURE member and current board member,
received the annual Media Award. Dick Kroger of
Wood Lake was named Volunteer of the Year for the
many hours spent as Senior Policy Analysist for
CURE. The RiverKeeper Award was presented to Terri
Dinesen, Park Manager of the Upper Sioux Agency
State Park. She was recognized for her work with
area schools on water testing and for the
presentations she conducts educating young people
about the importance of maintaining a clean river
environment. "We don't do what we do with the
kids to win awards," said Dinesen. "We
know it is important because they are our future
land managers." Her goal of promoting the
region, the trail initiative and her involvement
with land resource management are just some of the
many things close to Dinesen's heart. The main
focus of her work is to manage wetlands, as well
as working with the federal government to manage
the CRP program. Dinesen's selection was a secret
from her until the presentation was made. "It
was a treat to surprise her," said Patrick
Moore, CURE Development Director. "She didn't
know it was coming and that was fun."
According
to Moore, CURE as an organization, "relies on
passionate, knowledgeable individuals who want to
work with others and that all three of our award
recipients exemplify those characteristics."
At
the end of the evening, a drawing was held with
the winner receiving a "Current Designs"
Kayak donated by the We-No-Neh Canoe Company .
Winners of the Kayak were Tim & Shelly
Elkington of Montevideo. A silent auction was also
held with the proceeds going to help fund CURE
projects.
