Meet our
New Board Members
|
Four new
board members were recently chosen to join the CURE
Board of Directors. Please welcome these new board
members when you have the opportunity to meet them in
your communities.
Steve
Hettig, Olivia,MN
Talk to Steve Hettig for just a minute, and you
know two things. He's funny and works harder
than most at everything he tackles. A
longstanding member of CURE, Steve has devoted
his life to preservation of the environment and
his community. He serves the Renville Chapter of
the American Cancer Society, is a member of
organizations like the Land Stewardship Project
and the Nature Conservancy, and he volunteers in
numerous other organizations. Steve has been
practicing law for over 29 years and, in his
rare "spare time" moments; he explores
the Minnesota River Valley with his spouse. When
speaking about his role in CURE, Steve said
"the work CURE does to protect and enhance
the Upper Minnesota River Watershed is crucial...if
those who come after us are to have the
opportunity to experience the beauty of the
valley." Steve takes the mission of CURE
very seriously, even if his humor is reminiscent
of another river man. Like Mark Twain, he knows
about life on the mighty waters. |
Dwayne
Knutsen, Montevideo, MN
Dwayne Knutsen doesn't mince words.
"Nothing is more important to life than
water. The preservation, protection and
management of water resources should not be left
to chance." We couldn't agree more. Dwayne
is also a veteran lawyer, and has served the
area as Chippewa County Attorney since 1999. He
grew up in South Dakota, far from any
"decent" canoeing water. Since moving
to Montevideo, however, he has canoed all of the
local rivers except the Pomme de Terre. Dwayne
and his family have been members of CURE since
it began, and he considers the river to be as
much his home as it is his playground. As a
kindred spirit with many of the CURE board
members, Dwayne tells us that his family is the
most important thing in his life. Respect for
family and community are what make people like
Dwayne care about cleaning up our water. That,
and he says he's lucky. Let's hope he brings
that to CURE as well! |
Donna
Kruger, Montevideo, MN
Donna Kruger is one organized environmentalist.
Since moving to a farm outside of Montevideo,
seven months ago with her husband and two cats,
Donna has joined CURE, the Land Stewardship
Project and the Montevideo Fiesta Committee.
Once in awhile the word "ya'll" slips
in to Donna's conversation, because she is Texas
born. Her spirit is Minnesotan, however, since
her family comes from Springfield. She has a
Master's in Ecology, and her passion for the
prairie and the waters that feed them are
present in everything she does for CURE. When
she has nothing else on her plate, Donna helps
revitalize the prairie by assisting with
controlled burns. Donna makes a great board
member as well as volunteer, because she
embodies everything that CURE needs; intelligent
vigilance and the belief that every person has
something remarkable to contribute to their
community. |
Larry
M Larson, Milan, MN
Larry Larson is everything he appears to be: a
mild-mannered, soft-spoken and superbly polite
person. A nice Minnesotan. However, behind that
tasteful facade is the heart of a champion,
willing to take on one of the greatest
environmental challenges we face in our state.
Larry has spent his life living on the banks of
the Chippewa River and it is his home in every
way. When not serving CURE, Larry remains active
in the Chippewa County Historical Society, the
Montevideo Masonic Lodge and the Willmar Shelter
House. As a gravel business owner, his work on
both sides of the Pomme de Terre gives him a
unique expertise on restoration and
preservation. Since joining the CURE board,
Larry has distinguished himself as one of those
who steps up and volunteers for the "hard
stuff," the parts of the CURE mission that
can be uncomfortable for some...advocating and
protecting. Despite this, Larry remains humble, considering
himself to be completely "average." If
all of us could be so average, CURE's work would
be complete. |

"Americans
already enjoy the lowest foods costs in the world and
the true expense of food production must include costs
associated with perpetual protection of out soils, water
and air. Let's talk about ideas that will make the
farmers more profitable and clean up our rivers and
lakes and protect our ground waters."

Ag Conservation Initiative Advisor
