Two
separate River Bank Clean Ups were held on Saturday,
October 6, 2001. The Madison and Montevideo National
Guard units each donated four hours of community service
time to help in river clean up efforts. CURE organized
and advertised the clean ups.
Soldiers
from the Madison Guard Unit worked at a farm located
near the LqP County Park that is owned by Paul
Schwendemann. They removed many years worth of old car
bodies, farm machinery and various other metal junk from
riparian woodland. It required the use of large
machinery and winches.

Twenty-two
soldiers from the Montevideo Guard Unit filled two
20-yard dumpsters full of an assortment of junk at a
site located south of Montevideo along the Minnesota
River. It took 22 soldiers four hours of handwork to
accomplish this feat. The clean up is not finished and
is scheduled to continue.

"This
is a great project. We’re glad to support CURE and
help the community. I hope more people will get involved
in the future. This is an excellent activity for other
organizations such as the Scouts," states Sgt.
Loran Haas. If you have land adjacent to public waters
that you would like cleaned up or would like to get
